Along with its needed effects, a medicine may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.

Check with your doctor as soon as possible if any of the following side effects occur:

  • Rare: Memory problems - more common in older patients; behavior or mental changes
  • Less common: Drowsiness (severe); aggressiveness; skin rash; wheezing; tightness in chest; difficult or labored breathing; shortness of breath ; behavior changes
  • More common: confusion - more common in older adults; difficulty with coordination - more common in older adults; daytime anxiety and/or restlessness; clumsiness or unsteadiness - more common in older adults; mood or mental changes

Get emergency help immediately if any of the following symptoms of overdose occur

  • Symptoms of overdose: Clumsiness; unusual sleepiness; reduced physical activity; sluggishness; unusual tiredness or weakness; drowsiness (severe) ; mental or mood changes; unsteadiness; loss of consciousness

Zopiclone may cause you to have a coated tongue, bad breath, or a bitter taste. These effects are to be expected when you are taking this medicine.

Special precautions

Other medicines - although certain medicines should not be used together at all, in other cases two different medicines may be used together even if an interaction might occur. In these cases, your doctor may want to change the dose, or other precautions may be necessary. When you are taking zopiclone, it is especially important that your doctor and pharmacist know if you are taking any of the following:

Other medical problems - the presence of other medical problems may affect the use of zopiclone. Make sure you tell your doctor if you have any other medical problems, especially:

  • Liver disease (severe) - Higher blood levels of zopiclone may result, increasing the chance of side effects
  • Kidney disease or
  • Sleep apnea (temporary stopping of breathing during sleep) - Zopiclone may make these conditions worse
  • Myasthenia gravis or
  • Mental depression or
  • Emphysema, bronchitis, asthma, or other chronic lung disease or
  • Drug abuse (or history of) - Dependence on zopiclone may develop
  • Alcohol abuse (or history of) or

Take this medicine only as directed by your doctorDo not take this medicine when your schedule does not permit you to get a full night's sleep (7 to 8 hours).
