Pirazetam (brand name: Nootropil®, Myocalm®), is a cerebral function regulator drug which is understood to be able to boost mental powers as well as slow down brain aging. Pirazetam is used to relieve anxiety, muscle spasms, and seizures and to control agitation caused by alcohol withdrawal. Some studies have found that Pirazetam may be useful in the treatment of ischemic stroke. Several studies have also found that the drug is an effective treatment for myoclonus, a condition that can affect Alzheimer’s patients. Trials showed that Pirazetam inhibited myoclonus and significantly improved the patient’s quality of life.

Pirazetam is considered the first smart drug and is still one of the most popular. It is said to increase cognitive functions including memory and learning. Pirazetam is used against mental syndromes caused by cerebral deficiency, disturbances in the mental performance of the elderly, with higher dosages, treatment of psycho-organic senility syndrome, disturbances caused by alcohol withdrawal.
Pirazetam is nootropic agent. An effect on metabolism has been shown in man indicating improved oxygen utilization. NOOTROPIL has a low toxicity and has no stimulating, sedative or neurovegitative activities. Pirazetam has been used with varying effect in the following conditions and could influence them favourably, although no convincing proof of efficacy has been submitted.
1. Involutional syndromes related to ageing.
2. Chronic alcoholism.

Special precautions

• Nootropil does not interfere with the patient’s capacity to drive or operate machinery.
• Interactions: No interactions with commonly used pharmaceutical products have been found
• Patients suffering from renal disorders should take Nootropil with caution and in lowered dosages.
• Pregnancy, Nursing and Children: This product is not contraindicated during pregnancy and nursing and may be taken by children.
• There are no known contraindications except for patients with hypersensitivity to Pirazetam . Patients with renal disorders should use Pirazetam with caution. It has been verified that certain patients show hypersensitivity to the product.

Side effects

Side effects may include:

• Headaches
• Dizziness
• Nausea

On are occasions, the patient may overreact to this product. Lowering the dosage will be sufficient. Consult your doctor concerning any unpleasant side effect not described in this leaflet.
